Sony Price Drop Mystery Solved, Thanks Scooby-Doo

Monday, July 16th, 2007

David Reeves of SCEE (Sony Europe) stated last week that the US price cut of the PS3, which dropped the unit to $499, was only temporary. It is taking place to clear out the current stock of 60GB models to make room for the “Huge New Harddrive” 80GB model.

SCEA (Sony America) replied with a, “Nah-uh, get out my business and stop tellin’ lies.”

Now, just a few short days later, it seems Mr. Reeves was telling the truth. Sony spokesman Dave Karraker has confirmed the phase-out of the 60GB model in the US. He said, “The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for USD 499 until supplies of that unit are depleted….We won’t be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.”

This doesn’t mean there is a 100% chance Sony is only dropping the price to make space for the 80GB model, but it does seem to point in that direction. By comparison, this $100 jump for 20GB more space makes the jump from Xbox 360 Premium to Xbox 360 Elite (100GB and HDMI added) for $180 seem cheap. Almost.
